- What to Expect -

• Eagle Feeding:

A speed boat takes you about 20 minutes up river from the starting point. The vessel’s engines are then switched off to avoid scaring off the eagles. The boatman will then throw bait in the form of chicken skin into the river for the eagles to retrieve.

Moments later, as many as 30 to 40 eagles will circle the sky and surround the area, swooping in fast towards the river with great precision for the food. The act is repeated about 4 times, with the feeding session lasting about 20 minutes.

• Fireflies

For maximum visibility, the best time to experience Kuala Selangor’s fireflies is slightly after 8pm on a clear, moonless night. Any later than that, and the fireflies may have found a mate, causing them to stop flashing. The firefly is a type of insect from the beetle family. The ‘Pteroptyx tener’ species is the most dominant in Kuala Selangor, measuring about 5mm in length.

At night, these tiny insects congregate on berembang trees (Sonneratia caseolaris), a type of mangrove tree that grows naturally in the brackish waters along Selangor River’s banks.

• End the night

It is recommended to go from 9.00pm onwards, as bioluminescent displays are best viewed at least two hours after sunset. The “Blue tears” can only be captured with good photography equipment.
